Although relatively unknown, Amin Motevaselzadeh’s name was on the lips of many fans back in 2010. His Iranian club side, Moghamvemat, were desperate for a win and visited fellow relegation rival Steel Azin in a vital game of the season for both teams. With the striker’s team losing 2-1 in the final 10 minutes of the match, the game was going to go to the wire.
With minutes to go, Motevaselzadeh’s teammate was put through on goal, with only the keeper to beat. In a moment of panic, the keeper suffered a head injury in a collision with the striker, dropping the ball to the feet of Motevaselzadeh. With Steel Azin’s goalkeeper on the ground, the striker simply had to score into an open net.
But what happened next shocked both sets of fans. In a moment of true Corinthian Spirit, Motevaselzadeh quickly kicked the ball off the pitch, calling for a medical team to come to the aid of the opposing goalkeeper. The striker was surrounded by the opposing team, as well as some of his own teammates, thanking him for this gesture.
The game would be a bitter sweet pill to swallow for Motevaselzadeh but his actions were televised and celebrated around the world and used to highlight the true meaning of sportsmanship. Regardless of the match or consequences, fair play is always the right way - another timeless moment of Corinthian Spirit.
Moghamvemat would be relegated shortly afterwards on goal difference.
